I recently took a class through my local woodturners association for platter making (The Ash one in the last picture). I enjoyed it, and I've had some 6/4 walnut for a while now, and thought this would be a good use for it. I'm not really in to live edge, really, so it didn't bother me 😁
The platter itself came out around 11" diameter, and right about 1-1/2" height once it was cleaned up. I finished it with Tried & True Original Wood finish, so it's food safe and easily repairable, if I ever use it lol
Also made a video walking through the process, which was a fun exercise, and good practice. I hope to do a live stream at some point, and this helped iron out some of the kinks in that setup.
Pottz, if I minded them being copied, I wouldn't have posted the how to 😉 Plus then when I don't turn one for a year, I'll have something to reference lol
Great video Mos... Not a fan of bowls (even your shallow ones), however, I did find the video and your presentation more enjoyable than initially thought.
Once oiled that walnut plate looked great, but then (in my opinion) the blank, oiled, would still have looked great.
As a display piece, I can see major use, but for kitchen use, I just don't drink enough to justify.
If your first cut is too short... Take the second cut from the longer end... LBD
And yeah, Duck, I'm often torn as I make bowls and platters, that I've yet to use any of them in the kitchen/dining room. I had a dream last night, though, that my parents hosted a gathering (probably Easter, at this point) and were so strapped for plates they used all the bowls that I've given them over the years. Though it also included several that they didn't end up with, so not sure what that means lol
I just like turning, making sure my house doesn't fill up with things I've turned is the tricky bit :D
I have a sister, SIL, mom and MIL that love turned bowls and platters. So if y'all have any that you need to dispose of, I can send you addresses 😂 Bowls aren't my favorite things to turn so I haven't saturated them all yet.
