Natural Edge Bowl

This is a bowl I turned from what I was told was Russian Olive. After seeing some other Russian Olive turnings at my local turners guild recently, though, I'm not sure if it actually is. If you can either confirm it is, or have an idea of things it would be, please let me know. It's tough, but beautiful stuff. It came from a coworkers back yard in MN, if that helps.

Anyway, that aside, it's finished with Tried & True Original Finish. It's about 7.5" diameter and 5" height. This was a request by a customer, and they were thrilled with it. I was almost sad to see it sell, as this was my last bowl sized chunk of this wood, and probably the most beautiful one yet.

That turned out nice.  Doesn't really look like the Russian olive that I have seen.  Looks more like cherry or maybe some other fruit tree wood.

No idea of the wood type, but really like how it turned out!  Really eye catching.
RO down south here grows fairly fast so the grain is very coarse. It also tends to crack easily. Northern growth probably has a denser grain.

The heartwood color seems about right however.

The one thing is RO really stinks when being cut, absolutely awful.

That is a beauty of a bowl however so keep up the great work!
What a beautiful piece of wood. Your turning shows it off well!
Looks great Mos! No idea what the wood is, but the bowl is pretty!

Ryan/// ~sigh~ I blew up another bowl. Moke told me "I made the inside bigger than the outside".

beautiful bowl, love that grain.

working with my hands is a joy,it gives me a sense of fulfillment, somthing so many seek and so few find.-SAM MALOOF.

Thanks everybody!  And yeah, the lack of coarseness in the grain is what's throwing me.  I never got to see the tree before it was cut down so I don't really know what it looked like before.

Either way, whatever it is; every bowl I've turned from the stuff I got from him has had spectacular grain patterns in it

Nice job Mos, the worst part of not being able to identify a piece of wood you really like, is you can't buy more if you don't know what it is.
