Roundover and Chamfer planes

I made these planes several weeks ago and just finished some minor improvements. One is a Roundover Plane and the other is a Chamfer Plane. Both are made of Maple. The dark sides are torrefied Maple and the lighter inner part is eastern hard Maple. Made entirely with hand tools. I made the blades as well. The planes are a joy to use.

Nice work, a lot of us are hungry for hand made tools, and what went into the making, so thanks for posting, but if you could entertain any of the below many thanks, if not thanks for posting what you did.

Could you please shoot a pic or two more. Maybe unassembled, sole shot, blade shot, and let us know angles they are bedded, and a little on how you got to that point. If you have any build shots maybe a blog like entry to show the process you used? Seeing as you made the irons, any further info on that process would also be great.

I don't ask for much right???? :-)))
The bottoms on both are 90° V grooves ( see photo) This is because I designed them to ride on the workpiece corners. At the moment I just sharpened the blades on both and set them for a project I'm doing so disassembly photo shots not at this time. I attached a photo looking down into the throat. Bed angles for both are 45°. If I were to do again I would maybe go 50°.
I had some tool steel flat bar for making the  blades. I annealed first to remove hardening. I used a propane torch and brought to cherry red. I let it cool, and then grinded. shaped, and beveled the
cutting edge at 30°. Then heated up again to cherry red and quenched in oil. Then heated up again to a straw color and quenched in oil again to temper. Finally I honed.

Thanks. How do I "like" your reply?
you just did ! we dont have likes here, we just tell each other, we like it ! were more into personal conversation than that, other place. i think you'll like the way we do it here ? oh and there is no "cricket" or "sheriff john" that will edit your comments, or remove them. martin pretty much lets us do what we want, as long as it's civil and we dont attack each other. it's nice being allowed to be an adult !

Welcome MrR'.

I've made a few plain, handmade plane kits,
many, many years ago as most beginners go through the motions... though I'm not a pla i ne man as can be seen from the pokey dowels (above) and the way I dress

... even though they work great (the planes, not the barrel), I prefer to kill electrons.

Unfortunately, after 1.5 years here at Craftisian, I still haven't been allowed to wear adult pants,

If your first cut is too short... Take the second cut from the longer end... LBD

Nice looking planes, always handy to have a little chamfer plane lying around.

I've also made the odd plane myself, but not made my own irons.
Those planes are really what I need.   They look great and the work they do is also good.

Ron

excellent and attractive planes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Very nice planes! The added pics were helpful - thanks.
Glad you like them. Cheers!
Rick, thanks for the added info. I'm sure a lot of folks here also got a good buzz from seeing and reading about the how, why and all that. That sole pic is almost evil. That gleam on the steel is looking wicked sharp.

Thanks again, and use them in good health. Glad you made the trip over here.
