Cherry & Maple Tray - Try 3

I got the inspiration for this tray from Splinter Group’s build of a similar tray, only his has amazing Marquetry Butterflies.

We have a tray at our Washington house that we use to go to dinner parties to carry the food we will share. We find it very handy.   I decided to make 3 identical trays.  One for both of our kids families and one for our house in AZ.

Trays are 18.5” x 13.75” x 2.5” which after making them seems too large.  The ends are cut at a 15 degree angle.

I had some 8/4 Cherry and 6/4 Figured Maple from my last Entry Table project.  I love the figured Maple and decided the tray bottoms would feature that wood.

I cut 3/16” veneers from the board and laminated them with 1/4” BB using a Vacuum Bag and air pump.  After they dried I sanded them veneer side with a drum sander until it fit the grooves in the sides.  The veneer panels are book matched.

Finish is several coats of blonde shellac.

I made some jigs out of 1/4” MDF with runners for the TS miter gage slots double back taped to the jig bodies.

Nice work Dave. I like a tray for toting along the necessities. These look great.
Thanks for the comments.  First time using a vacuum bag.

Yes, very nice trays.   well done.

Finally got the bad pictures deleted and added one more picture.  The piece in picture 2 had a mistake in the slot for the tray bottom, I accidentally pushed the piece past my stop marks and cut through the end.  That gave me a trial piece to set blade/bit depths on.

Nice trays! I've never dove into the vacuum bag experience - maybe someday.
Probably if truth was told anyone who has cut Dado's for bottoms has overcut and was left with a learning experience, and you get practice in putting in filler plugs too.

Always learning. :-))
