Book and coffee mug stand

This little book and coffee mug stand is a (belated) Mother's Day gift for my mother-in-law (none of those jokes that typically go with MIL - I love her!).  I saw various designs online and came up with this version.  This will allow for a good size paperback book to be held in place, plus a spot for her TV remote and phone, and then a coffee mug.  She has a side table next to her chair and this should fit nicely there.  The "tray" has a stop so it cannot pull out all the way.  The wood is mahogany, and I used Odie's oil for finish.  The cork was purchased online and has pretty strong adhesive so am relying on that.

Nicely done Barb! The tray is a great idea. Thanks for posting it!

Ryan/// ~sigh~ I blew up another bowl. Moke told me "I made the inside bigger than the outside".

RyanGi- thanks! Looking online, a few had  drawers.  I started in that direction, but a full drawer seemed unnecessary for the type of items, and would take up space that is somewhat limited.  This isn't a perfect solution as I guess a small item could slip to the side.
well done barb what a perfect gift for someone that reads. i know she loved that.

working with my hands is a joy,it gives me a sense of fulfillment, somthing so many seek and so few find.-SAM MALOOF.

Pottz and Tony - thanks!  It is yet to be given, but hope she likes it.  She lives about 700 miles away so we take gifts along when we travel to visit.  Often I'll send a picture in advance, or otherwise keep the "surprise" until we are there in person.
best to surprise her then you can see her face very nice 👍

Nice!  How did you make the little ribbed frame for the cork?

You could also whip-up one of these thumb book holders to tuck into the drawer.
Nice Barb, handy little stand.
I tend to scan the picture gallery first and recognized the use when I saw the book. Made me smile when I then saw the remote drawer.
Got to thinking, cup of coffee while enjoying a read, get bored, see what's on tv!

Nice gift!
Pretty cool There have been many times I could have used one!

looks like a winner.    Nicely done

Nice design. Putting your spline jig to good use. Nice sets of clamps. You give LBD a run for his money
Very nice Barb. I loved my MIL too.

This takes a bookmark, and has it hold your coffee, and the TV remote, a lot of firepower. Nice make.
Ross - the ribs were made by taking a lot of passes at the table saw, first one direction and then the other.  Tried to keep uniform cuts.  I then cleaned up the middle with chisel and scrapers for the cork.  Gives it a different look.  I thought about doing one of those thumb holders, but she has some arthritis so ruled that out.
MikeB - thanks!

Splintergroup - my husband had asked her what she typically has by her chair when reading, and she said her phone and the TV remote.  So tried to accommodate those.

Jim - thanks!  I'm sure your version would have special mechanisms or secret compartments!

Ron - thank you!

Corelz125- I'm now always looking for opportunities to use that spline jig!  In this case, I do think that top joint needed support.

GeorgeWest- thanks.  I saw some online that also had a pencil/pen holder slot and a way to support an iPad.  I just included what I thought she would find useful.
Cool design and looks great too.
Swirt-thank you.  I sent some pictures to her and she was very pleased.  Will deliver when we travel over thr summer to visit with family.
Very creative design - a whole lot of function in a small space!
Thanks Steve!  There are so many versions online - I tried to include the features that would be a good match for her.
Had "extra" mahogany so made a "bonus" tissue box holder.  I don't recall using mahogany and walnut together, but wow I love the combination.
Before the finish with Odie's Oil
