Bois D'Arc Platters
These Osage orange platters were from some chunks that have been sitting on my patio for way too long (3-4 years). I sliced the chunk into ~2" pieces, removing the pith. I started by mounting etween centers to turn round and add recesses on the bottom for mounting in a chuck for shaping. After rough shaping, I filled some cracks and voids with mica dyed epoxy and some with tinted CA. The CA is easier to use in smaller cracks than the epoxy. The finish is 3 coats of General Finish Wood Bowl finish. After the final coat cured, I polished it with Acks abrasive paste and Acks finishing wax to take the sheen up a notch. Yellow Bois d'arc usually will slowly darken with age and UV light exposure to sort of coppery brown.

Thanks guys. One is 9.25" and the other is 8.5". Would have been a little bigger but there were pretty bad cracks that I had to turn away. I just wish they would stay this color. They'll still be pretty when they get more brownish but the yellow really pops. I am really liking the Acks abrasive paste for polishing finishes. It helps fix minor flaws in the finish. I've used it on poly too with similar results.
It looks like the Martin may have started using the Transloadit API to handle uploading and encoding today. The watermark might be a setting or due to a trial period or something? Looks like it started showing up with today's project uploads.

Nice work on the platters. With the OO sitting around for 3 years, what is hard to turn?? I had a piece I shaped up in Arizona when I first got it and then tried to finish it a couple year later and I think I need carbide to cut it now. It sure is pretty grain!!! I see you have the Transloadit on all your photos too!!

Les, I actually have one more to make. They are sort of commission pieces for a friend of my wife and they want 3 items. I think she is going to give them as gifts to her kids or something like that. The last blank has more cracks and bug holes to fill so it will either come apart or look really cool after filling all of the voids. I have a couple more chunks laying around in case it comes apart and have to start over.
Jim, it wasn't hard to turn and my HSS tools worked just fine but it seemed dustier than I expected. More of the shaving came off as finer dust instead of ribbons or chips for some reason. That yellow dust winds up everywhere. I definitely had to sharpen my tools more often than other woods. The only carbide tool I used was a shear cutter from Simple Woodturning Tools that was good for cleaning up the bottom without risking a catch and disaster at the end. It is different than other carbide tools because it cuts more like like traditional HSS tools and you get fine ribbons as it cuts.
