Dressing up my drill press

I finally finished my drill press table and stand.  I think it took 3 years from start to finish and somewhere along the way we moved and Covid got in the way.

The stand is made from cherry.  The drawers are white oak, with dovetailed boxes and full extension side mounted glides.  The Nova drill press sits on a 1-3/4 thick piece of white oak, with holes drilled through the top to secure the drill press since it is very top heavy.

I made the drawer fronts out of a variety of exotic bit and pieces.  The patterns are craftsman style to match the style of the drawers and front of the work bench.   For those of you that have seen other pieces I've done know I like to make mosaics like this.

Originally, I started to make a top using the Woodsmith plans that included drawers under the table.  After nearly completing te top I realized it looked really clunky, didn't compliment the style of th base, was the size of an aircraft carrier, and generally looked ugly.

Functionally, it was a mess too.  I was trying to get gears and cogs to work since the handles to raise/lower the table and tighten it in place were completely inaccessible.    One day I pitched the whole mess in the garbage and started over.

The top (30x19) is 6/4 butcher block white oak  with walnut trim around the front and sides.  All of the components are from Woodpeckers (DP Pro fence, drill press table package -1).  I decided that I would probably spend as much making my own version of the in-fence dust removal fence and still not have the rulers on the inset slots so I went with the store-bought version.

Actually, the dust removal is really pretty decent.

As I mentioned on the Beer Swap forum, I'm waiting for the Woodpeckers knurled hold downs since the Rockler blue ones clashed and they wouldn't fit in the slot.

There are still a couple of  issues:  I had to notch the back edge so the handle will rotate to raise/lower the table:

Also, the arm that raises the quill/shaft will hit the knob that tightens the fence in the slot:

Things are also a bit tight underneath:

All in all, it turned out, a it slow, but in the end, it's solid and looks good.

You are a build it right and only once kinda guy Earl. Eliminated the evidence eh? 😎

Certainly did the right thing with the clamps, red vs. blue, no question.

Very nice work, Earl. As Splint said, you get it right.

May you have the day you deserve!

Geez Earl, this is my first time seeing fine furniture for a drillpress!  You are not going to use that are you?
All in jest, super work....we are all jealous.

Looks great! Nice job!!

Ryan/// ~sigh~ I blew up another bowl. Moke told me "I made the inside bigger than the outside".

Wow.. A great looking drill press table and beautiful drawers.   It would make me smile every time I used it.

Earl, that is fantastic. As others have said, a piece of furniture. Wow!!
Nice job on the DP table.

I also have that WP fence and love it.  I have their table w drawer, but I think the drawer w stuff in it makes it too hard to raise the table w the had crank.

Really like what you have done here.

Sexy stand Earl!  But I'd have expected no less 😎
Yeah, there is shop cabinets, then there is "shop furniture", but this stuff is the full Earlizing.
That is one fancy drill press stand and table. I wish I had that floor in my shop!!

Jim,

The floor is polyurea because the concrete was spalling pretty bad and the concrete contractor wouldn't warranty it.  He claimed it was from road salt, even though I don't park my car on that side.
That's quite nice! I'd try something like that, but I also cut a lot of metal.
