Stanley 72 mini-till

Just a quick weekend project for a much ignored plane. I’ve got a 72 that’s in great ‘user’ shape and with a keen edge, but lives in a drawer in a sock since it’s not often used and I don’t have room in the till for it. I keep the 45 in the same drawer, along with a couple other ‘extras’ as well. There’s been a couple projects as of late where I really could have used the 72 but, in total honesty, I forgot I had it. 🙄 Embarrassing though that may be, what’s worse is it’s happened more than once! Bad, sad and mad all at the same time.
Well no more, I say!

I took the weekend to sort it out since I had a little downtime. My thought was to find a way to add it to the till. That wasn’t going to happen, so I started looking for another way to mount it to the tool wall. I’m short on space, so a horizontal shelf wasn’t going to work, despite trying some reorganization. I did find a somewhat out of the way vertical space, so I devised a bit of an albatross…but it worked out well!

The short version is: an extremely strong cylinder magnet used to hold the bullnose of the plane, and a horn on the bottom that slides into the hollow handle. A couple small magnets on the side to hold the fence, and the whole thing is built for the tool wall.

Really simple overall. They only challenge was making sure the main magnet wouldn’t pull out of the epoxy mount, since the plane sits vertical and gravity isn’t helping keep it in place…although the horn is very stable on the bottom side (5/8” dowel). I routed a slot using a 3/8 round nose bit, slightly deeper than 3/8 deep. The idea here was to have the cylinder magnet seat more than halfway deep, so the epoxy could wrap around it and effectively encapsulate it so it can’t just pop out. It seems to have worked ok. It’s slightly off center since I underestimated the amount of room I’d need for the fence to live comfortably on the mount.

The magnet is really strong…enough so that it holds (albeit loosely) a 6-inch steel rule through the remaining 3/8” thickness of the maple! Pretty strong! You can see the ‘past half’ epoxy job here. A little black mica mixed in, just ‘cause. I considered completely hiding the magnet in the epoxy, but chickened out since I didn’t want to risk losing control of the nose of the plane and having it come off the wall. As it ended up, you really have to twist the plane as you remove it to get the magnet disengaged…it’s strong!

As I said before, a couple secondary magnets to hold the fence.

Finished with spray lacquer to match the rest of my tool holding on the wall. Nicely stashed away, but now within view so the poor thing doesn’t get left out of the fun again!

Schweet!

Glad the magnet is over powered, better too much than hearing a thud on your shop floor in the middle of the night.
Just a little tiny one Pottzy. I like it because it’s got feet so I can thin small pieces down to a uniform thickness.

I agree, Splint!

I like your carrot storage on the wall next to the till.  😀

Since you last project post was organizing in the kitchen, it's only right to switch back to organizing in the shop!

Neat idea RGi...

I vaguely remember doing French at school, but I never imagined those cleats could serve a purpose in my older days... greatly under rated.

I have one of them... no, not the drawer and I wear SWMBO's panty hose... but, as Tattoo would point out,
but now within view so the poor thing doesn’t get left out o the fun again!
Unfortunately I never discovered the hollow in the handle (note to myself for a new hiding place)... so I had to make a box for it...

making it further out of sight... being secreted in a drawer, no wonder I never see a smile on it's face.

If your first cut is too short... Take the second cut from the longer end... LBD

cmon duckling you dont use those planes, admit it 😡

Guilty!

That's not sawdust on the plane... it's real dust... and it was in the box... in a sealed dust proof drawer.

🤣🤣🤣  I could use your help in my shop!!  I need to take a step back and do some serious reorganization.  Always seems like I have a project to work on so I put it off
Nice little storage solution, Ryan!

May you have the day you deserve!

Nice and tidy, with no wasted space. That’s an impressive collection of hand tools.
Appreciate it. Many more things I’d like to have, but room and budget slow that down!
