Wedding card box

This is a project I finished up about a year ago.  This was for my nephew and now "niece-in-law" to use at their wedding for cards.  I made it so that it could be used after the wedding for keepsakes, etc.  I made a little sign that I added woodburning "CARDS" that could be hung from the lid handle when open - didn't get a picture of that (thankful no need for a "locked box" at the wedding!!).

The wood is hard maple, and WOW it was hard - had to take multiple passes on the miters.  I had someone laser the names on the front as my woodburning abilities are crude at best (was OK for the little "CARDS" sign).  The top is walnut, as are the splines.  Had trouble with the hinges so had to drill and place a dowel so I could redo - was all under the hinge so wasn't visible.

Pottz - thanks.  I agree, handmade is better.

Also, had a lot of help from the Craftisian community with splines, hinges, and even wood selection.

Good looking box that will last a lifetime
Awesome keepsake!

Ryan/// ~sigh~ I blew up another bowl. Moke told me "I made the inside bigger than the outside".

Thanks guys.  The hard maple was a challenge - picked it based on the grain and ability to work well with the laser engraving.  Didn't realize how dense this wood really is!  Ended up a heavy box, which hopefully means it will stand the test of time.
Well done Barb!

Terrific looking box. Very clean look. I’m sure they loved it. Being able to use it after the event..even better.
Thanks Dan.  I liked the idea of future use.  I had someone comment to engrave "cards" leave the names off so they could pass it on to another couple to use.  I took the opposite view of making the "CARDS" sign part temporary and their names permanent.  I wanted this to be a gift just for them, rather than a temporary wedding decoration.
Beautiful box Barb! I frequently redrill and dowel hinge screw holes. Nobody knows (unless I tell them).
Steve -thanks.  I struggle with hinges.  Thankful I could easily fill the first attempt to get the screw/hinge better placed.  It was fully covered by the hinge (And remember to not say anything to anyone!!)
Nice box to gather all the cards!!!

Good job, I really like splines on projects like this.
Thank you Mel.  I built a spline jig for this project. Had procrastinated on making the jig for a while.  Glad I finally did as I have used it on several other projects.
