Binder storage shelves

Mrs G wanted a storage unit for her various binders. The biggest are 11-1/2” tall, 2” wide and 11” deep.
Her other cases are full of books, binders and knickknacks.
She said “it needs to hold about 8 binders and I want two shelves and a top.”
The space allocated was 18” wide and 30” tall—it sits next to her sewing machine storage unit.
During the dry fit, she said “make it narrower; I want more space on each side.”
Thus, final OD became 14-3/4” wide, 13-1/2” deep and 30” tall.
I glued up some 4/4 Cypress for shelves and milled it 3/4” final thickness. I used 5/4 X 2” heart pine for the legs, milling it to final thickness of 7/8” X 1-7/8”.
Leaving 2-3/4” off the ground for the bottom shelf and 12-1/2” between shelves gives two shelves for binders plus the top. Making the ID 13” wide and 12-1/2” deep allows for 12 2” wide binders. Should give her plenty room for growth.

A few of y’all might have seen the negative issues I found with the Ridgid TS. Well, taking the back off, straightening the bent plate, tightening the belt and using Boeshield T-9 on the moving parts resolved things.

The joinery is a variety of dados, grooves and rebates made mostly using a plunge router.
All the wood was offcuts from numerous prior projects.

The project is sanded smooth and ready for a finish. Mrs G is probably going to use a clear oil finish.
If she is happy you did great!   Therefore well done.

Gotta appreciate sturdy construction!
nohing better than a happy wife 😁

working with my hands is a joy,it gives me a sense of fulfillment, somthing so many seek and so few find.-SAM MALOOF.

Storage projects are always satisfying- great to full a need with a custom solution.  Nicely done!
It’s funny. I thought the design was going to require horizontal support across the back to prevent racking, particularly since there’s not much holding the shelves in.
I was going to glue and screw battens across the back.

But, after gluing the shelves in, it’s rock solid.
Since I had already milled them, I glued two pieces across the back—basically, so Mrs wouldn’t have to worry about pushing her binders in too far.

Happy Wife Happy Life. Kinda looks like this may have even earned ya a few new tools. Win Win.
No new tools. Used what I own.
What a difference the finish makes; this is after the first coat of Cabit clear exterior —it’s like exterior paint without tint.

One or two more coats and she’ll be ready for use.
