Another rod case..and rod

Migrating some old projects over from........

I recently finished a nice 7' bamboo fly rod and needed a case. This one is maple; I stained it with Transtint dye, and then removed most with alcohol. This left just enough stain to emphasize the grain. This time I was able to book match the strips. The end caps are lacewood. The other case is lacewood alternated with cherry strips, with lacewood end caps.

The reel seat and cork grip were turned on the lathe; a thumbnail bit routed the recess for the reel foot.  The reel seat insert is birch; a nicely figured scrap that stayed in scrap pile for about 30 years - how's that for hoarding wood ?

nice reel seat and rod carey. case is beautiful but i dont know how it would handle in and out of float planes in the arctic though. we always relied on extruded aluminum ones, and they took a beating over the years.

working with my hands is a joy,it gives me a sense of fulfillment, somthing so many seek and so few find.-SAM MALOOF.
