Dog gate

Son and DIL wanted to be able to keep the dog on the first level of their new home, while allowing the cats to roam freely.  It might also be called a dog filter.

I built this gate to filter out the dog.

It was a bit more complicated than a simple gate, as the stringers for the stairs protruded 10" beyond the adjacent wall; the builder had covered it with a crude box that looked ridiculous.   This was accommodated by a box that fits over the stringers, and is screwed to a 2x6 screwed to the wall.  It needed to protrude further than I liked in order for the hinge side to be screwed into a stud.  The gate itself required strong joints to carry the load of a 40" span.  I used half-lap joints, pegged; I really wanted to use bridle joints but got cold feet.

Turned out nicely.  I had to leave before the dog encountered the gate.

Nice job adjusting to the space. It looks great!
Good solution!

Ryan/// ~sigh~ I blew up another bowl. Moke told me "I made the inside bigger than the outside".

Really nice work!

Really looks nice...does it keep the dog out??
Nice looking, our pet store gates are not near as nice.
How tall is the gate, what breed of dog????

I had to leave before the dog encountered the gate.
I understand! Don't want the dog blaming you for his new prison experience! 🤔
