Son and DIL wanted to be able to keep the dog on the first level of their new home, while allowing the cats to roam freely. It might also be called a dog filter.
I built this gate to filter out the dog.
It was a bit more complicated than a simple gate, as the stringers for the stairs protruded 10" beyond the adjacent wall; the builder had covered it with a crude box that looked ridiculous. This was accommodated by a box that fits over the stringers, and is screwed to a 2x6 screwed to the wall. It needed to protrude further than I liked in order for the hinge side to be screwed into a stud. The gate itself required strong joints to carry the load of a 40" span. I used half-lap joints, pegged; I really wanted to use bridle joints but got cold feet.
Turned out nicely. I had to leave before the dog encountered the gate.
