An experiment

With nothing but time on my hands I spend it imagining what something would look like.  So here is the result of one of those times.  The pen kit is Pen State ind's gold colored kit and the buttstock and forearm are poured resin.   I poured the resin in a 2" x 2" x 6" mold and shaped from there.
Now, lets talk about some real scrap  -
When mixing the resin I added shavings and cuttings from the lathe work on previous kits.  As well, I gathered antler dust from the band saw along with some walnut shavings from the table saw.  I also put a couple solid antler slivers in the mold just for shits and giggles.
I tried to make something more or less, one of a kind.  I think I at least accomplished that part to the max.
I'm a lot better with my tools than I am with a camera so please enjoy my pictures and allow some mercy.

Cool idea! Now you can't throw anything away 😊
Looks like you've found a way to make unique patterns Dick! Endless variations.

I'll be sending you all my shavings and "bits" so you can keep at it, I'd hate to see you slow down 🤠

Wow! Cool!

Ryan/// ~sigh~ I blew up another bowl. Moke told me "I made the inside bigger than the outside".

It might be hard to believe but I already have enough dust in varied shapes and forms to last many us us here  for quite a while - but thanks for the thought  lol

btw  -  the pen is sold
Very nice work Recycle, this is a fine looking pen.
When I first looked at the pictures prior reading the story, I thought for sure that you used marble, honestly. It crossed my mind: how did he do that? how the heck do you shape a hard stone like that?
I've never used epoxy resin, and I imagine working cured epoxy is pretty hard as well, how did you shape it?

A belt sander, oscillating sander, ROS sander and some hand sanding.   I have managed to throw away several butt stocks because of not paying attention on the belt sander.  As soon as I try to short cut or speed up the process I really do end up with a piece of scrap.  I would guess it takes me about 3 hours to complete a butt stock once I have a blank.
But time isn't an issue, I've got all the time I have left  ‹(•¿•)›
