all deer antler

Since there is no Deer Antler working category I had to put this pen under woodworking  -

A few weeks ago I made a few lever action pens using deer antler in the fore stock of the of the pen.  At the time I wanted to make the butt stock out of antler as well but I couldn't find an antler big enough.   I mentioned this to a friend that has more than several Amish families nearby that are hunters.   Last week I was presented with a pair of antlers with enough stock in them to make many many pens ( front and rear stocks).   So my first chore was to pay for the antlers and the asking price was a lever action pen made with deer antler.   As can be seen in 5th picture, it is slightly bigger than the other pens and the extra is all in the butt stock.  I think it has a more proportionate appearance.    Henceforth, I'll probably make any more lever action pens with the larger style butt stock.

As you can see, I barely got into using up the antlers.   The hardest part was using a piece straight enough to drill for the fore stock.  A little bit of engineering, tape and super glue and I was in business.
I did have to fill a couple voids and I did that with chips made from turning the fore stock and super glue.  One feature of this pen is that there is no finish on it at all.  The fore stock was sanded to 10,000 with micro mesh (dry) and the butt stuck was sanded to 4000 and buffed on the cotton wheel.
All in all it came out pretty good  -  I think he'll like it, I do

real nice work on these Dick, i do the same as for no finish other than polishing with micro mesh.

Very nice, the deer antler has a great looking appearance to it, somewhat like wood. I guess that qualifies this project for the woodworking category.  I'm also assuming that the material probably works similar to wood, maybe hardwood?

yeah, it works similar to cherry or walnut except it's really porous and I've never tried to just buff cherry or walnut.
Very nice work. They look grat in the antler. Glad you managed to get your hands on some.

Kind of a winter camo effect, looks great!
Real pretty, Dick! Nice work.

May you have the day you deserve!

Beautiful pen, Dick!!!!!!!!

Alex  -  carving the stock isn’t really carving.  I’ve got half a dozen more to make so tomorrow I’ll do a ducky thing and show with pics how I do it.  It’s not necessarily how it should be done,  just how I do it.
however, missing the "how I do it" pics.

If your first cut is too short... Take the second cut from the longer end... LBD

butt stock blank

because of my lack of experience I have to drill the 7mm receiver while the blank is still a squared blank

prepping for band saw

shaping on the band saw

rough cut butt stocks - all band saw cuts

drilling the fore stock  -  it's a piece of curly Koa

squaring up the fore stock

then comes the tedious sanding and fitting of the butt end to the pen receiver.  If you do it on the belt sander, you'll probably be making another one because you didn't pay attention and sanded too much off.  That's just an observation, I would never do that  myself.
Almost forgot, this is how I finish the butt stock.  I use a piece of dowel rod with a few wraps of tape and twist it into the 7mm receiver.  after I apply my finish I support the dowel in a hand clamp and let the piece dry.   This one is Rose wood

Then standard pen assembly is started and you end up something like this

I totally realize this tutorial does not meet your schooling standards but I'm just a beginner

your tutorial is fine Dick. nice write up and pic's.

Good info Dick, lots more involved with non-tubular parts!
Thanks Reci... greatly appreciated.

Now here a blank cheque,

any you could fly over here and make one for me.... or if you prefer cash,

Another question... no doubt it's time for sanding, but what do you use?

Dremel, spindle, dowel wrapped sandpaper and elbow grease.... it's the final curves that make it look so outstanding.

Ducky  -  here's where it get's tiresome and NOT cost effective.   I should have mentioned that the blank starts out at about 1 1/8" wide x 2" (or so) long and 1/2'" thick.    I found that by starting at 1/2" I can get the 7mm hole centered a lot easier when the blank ends up at slightly less than 7/16" thick and tapered.   Then there's a step down process  -  The first is to get the nose (the smaller end with the 7mm hole) sanded down to a close dimension of the metal receiver pen.  I do that on the belt sander then finish by hand.
The curve in the end and midway is first cut out on the band saw then finish shaping on the oscillating drum sander.

then starts the tedious hand sanding

Actually, I never checked how much time is involved to make the butt end but I pretty sure there's over an hour invested in just shaping and finish sanding the end.  Then it has to be finished - I foam brush 4 to 6 coats of poly on it.  AFTER I seal it with CA.  If it doesn't get sealed properly, it WILL have a visual difference from the fore stock if you finish that piece with the standard ca coating and sanding.
Acrylic is a different story -

Penn State Industries Tony.    You can get them individually or in a 4 pack.   I sell so many I get 2 -  4 packs at a time.   You save $3 or $4 buck on each one if you buy the 4 pack.  The 4 pack comes with a gold, silver, gunmetal and black pen kits.   That makes it interesting for matching or contrasting lumber -
Thanks Reci... That is what I was

for.

Not having an arsenal of guns, this shot (no pun intended)

explains a lot to me. What I thought I detected, but wasn't sure... especially the how.

Thanks again....

You're more than welcome.   I would rather have come down to see you and explain it but the 22 hour flight is not all that comfortable.
Wife and I was down there 10 years ago - had a great time.  Spent most of our time in Melbourne and Sydney, didn't venture out too far

But with the 10 hour (11 with daylight saving) time difference would reduce it to 12 (or even 11) hour trip... once you're most people don't wanna go back.

Our wages are about 1/2 .5 (in decimal) of you guys in Yankeeland. So if you opened up a labour based business you'd save a fortune to smuggle home and bypass The Donald's tariffs..
