A couple of years ago, our community had a new dock built.
We’ve had some benches on the dock.
They were the wrong size, the plastic ends were cracked and they didn’t look nice.
At our last community meeting, I asked for and got a budget to build new benches.
I designed this new seating.
It’s roughly 6’ on the short side and 9-1/2’ on the long side.
The leg systems —the seat supports and the front legs — are mortise and tenoned into the rear leg. The back leg is tapered so it’s got a 12 degree angle back.
The seat boards are mitered into the middle and the back boards have a compound miter.
These are some of the parts used in making the bench:
The pic above is the rear of the leg in the corner.
It’s a bit tricky:
It’s ripped partway down at a 45. Then, another 2x is ripped partway down at 45 degrees the other way—giving me a 90 degree corner where the bench seat boards meet. The seat support is M&T into the rear leg 1” lower than all the other legs such that a 5/4 deck board can be attached to the seat support creating more purchase for the miters to ride on.
The round table is something I made several months ago using reclaimed timber from the community’s old horseshoe pits.
