Henry's silly rabbet box

This kept me busy for a while.
I made this for my Uncle Henry. He invited me to remove some lumber from his barn that had been stored more than 40 years. I made a lumber rack to bring some inside. Walnut and hemlock.

Rabbets and splined miters make up box and trays.

I use mdf to set up for the rabbets to make all my mistakes.

The trays are very similar in construction.

I really need a better system to cut stock for boxes like this. I used a jig to cut the box sides, and cut each tray piece individually using the Incra miter gauge.

I used the Woodpecker spline jig for the first time on this.

I used a featherboard to make splines.

Finished with Minwax Antique Oil Finish and paste wax.
8" long x 5" wide x 5 1/2" high.

Cool design and wood colors
Always nice to bring home barn wood. Looks good. Did you like using your spline jig for the first time?.

Could have been worse. I'll take it.
It's a good jig, I hope to wear it out.

Great pic post Hairy. What do ya recon Uncle Henry is gonna store in his rabbet box? Bunnies, or?? JK, I get the difference rabbit rabbet.

I bought a Chiwanese spline jig based off that WP one. Really hard to assemble, but it does a great job, and the metal ones will outlast about 30 of the Ho Made wooden ones.  They seem to widen out at all of the important places, and splines end up getting weird.

Nice work Hairy.
