Shoe-sitting stool

Apparently I have arrived at the point in my life that a stool is helpful for putting on my "outdoor shoes" in our garage. I was using a plastic step and thought - nope, I'm a woodworker and need something better!

Picked out a walnut board and got started.  I ran into some design issues (see forum post) and need to give credit to Bentlyj's design suggestion for getting me back on track. Splintergroup's suggestion on reinforcing the top/leg connection gives me peace of mind that it is solid.

Leg glueup

Beefed up the top by wrapping a cutoff so it looked thicker.

Glued and Dominoed the bottom shelf

Cut the dadoes in the legs by double side taping the legs
Fillers that allowed a screw to provide an extra insurance for the top dado
Pre-finish
After Odie's Oil

Nice execution on the bench  I'm sure it's rock solid
Nice solid design and execution, great work. This will be assisting you with your boots for a long time.
Getting help from others is one of the positives to belonging to a site like this, always someone with sufficient experience who is willing to help.

That's a lot of work in a little bench. Well done!!

That turned out great, Barb. It’s an attractive bench. I followed your progress in the forum thread; you got some good input.

If this bench will stay in your garage, did you give any thought to putting waterproof (plastic, rubber, etc.) pads under the legs? I’ve read cautions about end grain in contact with concrete floors absorbing moisture. I don’t know if that really happens, and I’m sure you finished the bottoms of the legs, but I thought I’d mention it. Other members will no doubt have thoughts on the matter.
good point ron. yes concrete floors in garages dont usually have any type of moisture barrier, so moisture can and will travel to the surface and your wood. is it a serious worry, probably not. but you made a damn fine shoe bench so id just attach some type of plastic buttons on the bottom of each leg and you'll be fine.

Thanks Pottz-hard to go wrong with walnut!

Corelz125- thank you! I cut the dadoes pretty snug so it felt solid before I added the glue and screws.

Oldtool - thanks! I so appreciate all the help and support everyone gives here on Craftisian.

Hairy - thank you! The project was a bit more involved than my initial thought, but happy with the outcome.

Thanks Ron! I plan to add some sort of feet. I ended up with a little rock so hopefully I can address that in addition to the potential moisture issue.  I did really soak finish into the end grain, but still will take extra precaution with some sort of pad or attachment.  As Pottz notes, too much effort to have it damaged by something that can be avoided.
your wood is fantastic and your construction is top notch and puppy approved GR8 JOB 😍😎👍

GR8HUNTER- thanks! You know all projects must pass the pup test!

Dave - thank you! I like that - abbreviated project name is now SPOB. 😉
That came out right nice-looking, and looks good and sturdy. Can't beat walnut, for sure! Well done!

Thank you Dark_Lightning!  I know using walnut for this was "unnecessary", but I figured I would enjoy seeing the bench by our entry door, so why not go for pretty plus functional.
Beautiful! The finish looks just awesome!

Ryan/// ~sigh~ I blew up another bowl. Moke told me "I made the inside bigger than the outside".

Thank you Ryan! I really like the look of walnut with the Odie's Oil.
One very good  looking stool or bench!   Good design, well executed, really fine walnut.

Ron

Thank you Ron! I would call the design a bit of a group effort. 🙂
Beautiful and functional....well done BB!

Mike

Thanks Moke! No reason why functional cannot be nice too. 🙂

Jim - thanks! I am looking forward to putting my shoes on with ease. 😉  And, hope to learn more with each project, to apply to the next. Seeing the projects here is inspiring and the descriptions helpful in applying techniques in my shop.
That bench looks awesome!

I'm curious - what is the motivation for the slots in the shelf? It looks good - just curious.
