Indian Laurel Box

Saw this piece of Indian Laurel, no previous experience with the wood, so had to try.  Thus  the box.
8 1/2" wide by 4 1/2" deep and 4" tall.  Sides are 5/8".    Like a thinner side for a small box but needed the width to accommodate the hinges.   The hinges were a new thing also.
The accent wood is Yellow Heart.    The mitered corners have a 1/8" thick Yellow Heart spacer and dowels.    Kind of an experiment on a bit of a different look.  The bottom has a cork liner.
Used a wipe on poly as it turned the Yellow Heart a bit Orange and that seemed to offset the Laurel nicely.

really nice Ron!   Love the design.

Very stylish Ron!

Excellent detail for the corners and lid. You must have had fun with those quadrant hinges, they always make me sweat.
Thanks all for the comments.    Yes the Quadrant hinges had more than one attempt to make it clear inside the side.

The proportion works well. The Indian Laurel to me looks like mahogany. Is it easy to work with? Was it hard to get the yellow wood in the miters?

James McIntyre

Easy to work.   Miter joint wood was glue to one side with only the inside edge placed exactly, other 3 sides of the yellow heart oversized then  trimmed after final glue up.

Ron

Very nice design!!!!!

Beautiful! Love the details on the corners, plus a great job with the hinges. Interested in how you do the glueup on the corners with the yellow heart spacers - do you do that and then add the dowels?
Dowels come last on the drill press.
Thanks for the interest.

Like most before me here, I think this is a great looking box, the mix of woods are very appealing to the eye, and I really like the corner treatments. Very nice work.
I really like the contrast between the light and dark woods. The corner jonery adds a nice detail and visual interest. I've never used those quadrant hinges. They look to be a bit of a challenge. Nice work...
Thanks for the comments, appreciated!

The extra details really work on this. Nice job!
Love the corner design…I’ll steal that one.

Ryan/// ~sigh~ I blew up another bowl. Moke told me "I made the inside bigger than the outside".

Nice contrast with the two woods and I like the dowels. Very nice.

I like those dovels on corners.

Interesting corner construction, and attractive stringing.  I gave up on quadrant hinges, and use Crawfords Smart hinges when cost isn't an issue.
Ron,

There is a lot to like about this box.
