This project was previously posted over at that "other" place. I'm gradually moving all of my entries over to this (much better) site, so some of you may have already seen this...
Details - Mesquite. Frame and panel construction with loose tenon joinery. It's 21 inches tall and the top measures 47 by 18.5. It has a removable Aromatic Cedar bottom. The finish is simple - two brush coats of Danish Oil (natural) and two sprayed coats of Shellac (blonde) The square plugs (60 total, 3 different sizes) and splines are Black Walnut. I used two Torsion Hinges from Rockler .
Got lucky with the lumber. The only sequence-cut boards I had were saved for the top. The rest of the planks were a mish-mash of wood from 3 different sources. But I think it ended up working out OK…
Questions and/or comments are always welcome. Thanks...
Thank you all for taking the time to view and comment on my project. Let me respond to each of your kind entries:
BB1 - Thanks. The wifey wanted a "matched" master bedroom set in Mesquite. I said "sure, if I can build it in the G&G style." It turned out to be a great compromise...
987Ron - Thank you. Nice thing about Mesquite, no need to add color. A simple finish looks best...
Steve Rasmussen - Thanks Steve. Kinda "lucked" into how good the G&G details and the Mesquite lumber looks together. When we decided to try this combination, we had our doubts. But now, we're addicted to the look...
Ron Stewart - Thanks Ron. Yeah, Mesquite has lots of character. Fortunately, the wife embraces the look. It's definately unique...
Oldtool - Appreciate the comment about the base. I put a lot of effort into that too. Thanks...
RyanGi - Thanks for the questions. Yes, the panels are "housed" within the surrounding frame(s). I've added an additional pic that shows the hinges. It's hard to see, but I recessed the hinges into the back rail so that the top would close flush against the leading (top) edges of the frame. Thanks again...
Splinter - Thanks for the kind words. Yeah, this thing is a load. Mesquite is pretty dense. Those square plugs are a labor of love. When making them, I just sort of "zone out." It's one of the few times in the shop that I treat myself to an adult beverage while working!
Pottz - As always, thank you. Your outstanding G&G table (found while searching on Google) is what led me to this site. More than glad to be here. Gracias...
