Recently I was approached by the neighborhood HOA to build this LITTLE BOOK LENDING LIBRARY for the subdivision. Guess I have somewhat of a reputation around the neighborhood as a woodworker of sorts. I gladly accepted the challenge as I haven't built one before and it looked like the type of challenge I was wanting.
The roof is suppose to resemble an open book. I must admit that the design was not mine but "stolen" from the August/2019 issue of Woodworkers Journal.
I constructed the house body out of a half sheet of 3/4" maple plywood as well as the "book" roof. For the white trim I used a piece of PVC siding so it didn't need any painting. The good thing about using the siding was that one side was smooth and the other side had a grain pattern. I chose to use the grain side.
The exterior red is a premium exterior house paint, 3 coats, and then I sprayed two coats of marine grade urethane the seal the entire library.
I covered the interior floor with a piece of thin sheet flashing I had laying around. I thought this might help with sliding books in and out. Making it easier and saving wear & tear on the floor.
Shortly after It was erected, it was almost full of books of all kinds. Maybe I should have made it larger or built two ! ! !
It sure is a nice feeling when I enter the subdivision and see that little red library being enjoyed by the entire neighborhood.
