1/8 inch thick walnut they are used to get the proportions correct and pleasing to the eye

Thanks Tony. I also found this from Wood magazine with some good applications to woodworking. I've always just gone with what dimensions I needed or what looked best to me.

And good choice with walnut - might as well have it look nice too. 😉
