Ipe Plant Shelves

the old shelves were made from mahogany and were getting very warped so i decided it was time for some new ones. i made a total of 4. i had a bunch of ipe left over so i thought that will last forever. i reused the mahogany corbels because they were in good shape and matched the ipe fairly well. this was a simple project but being ipe it was a PITA ! one thing that saved me a lot of time and effort was the milescraft circle router jig. i bought it last year after a review by tin snyder. i highly recommend it. cuts circles as small as 1-1/2" up to 52". finish was penofin.

Smart upgrade!

Feel sorry for your router bit, but hey, ipe is ipe.

Maintenance is always an issue, but ipe just turns grey and doesn't degrade. Light sanding and more Penofin, good for another season.
Those are nice big wide boards. Ipe looks real nice when some finish is applied. I can smell that sawdust through the pics. It has that distinct smell. Tools might need a little sharpening after this project.
A dollar or two there.....well spent looks good!

yeah it was no fun cutting and routing. each hole took about 8 passes. the boards are made up of 3 boards glued and dominoed together. i dont think you could even find ipe that wide ?

Good work.
Looks really nice! Pretty flowers too.
Looks like a house and garden magazine article. I’m sure you built in measures to keep the moisture  from your windows.

Super pottz!  Those look fantastic!
thanks kenny ! god i hate working with ipe but for outdoor stuff it cant be beat. no matter how bad it looks, give it a light sanding and some oil and it looks brand new again.

Nice work Pottz, these look pretty good. I was going to ask, but you may have answered my question in your last response, that being oil to protect the ipe. Any reason why you didn't use something like a marine finish, or maybe an outdoor deck coating? Just curious.
thanks OT. i never use a finish like a marine finish. they are a pita when it's time to refinish. oils will just dry out and all you need to do is a light sand and recoat and ipe looks like the day you made it ! my patio tables were made about 10 years ago and i just gave the table tops a light sand and a fresh coat and they look brand new.

Ryan/// ~sigh~ I blew up another bowl. Moke told me "I made the inside bigger than the outside".
