After considerable research and a couple of prototypes, this is my 1st molding plane design. A No. 7/8 round plane. Wood is maple. Exceptional results after some testing in both hardwoods and softer woods. I plan to make a few more of these molding planes of different sizes. The (round) plane creates a cove profile. The last planes I made were in 2003, a series of regular bench planes No. 4 size.
Challenge was to define the escapement for evacuation of shavings and developing the wedge pocket correctly. Also, working to ensure the round profile matched the plane iron shape.
I learned the steps to follow to be able to do this and the order of steps. Considerable precision is necessary because it is easy to remove wood but difficult to put back. Patience is key and to develop a methodological approach. Also wood selection and grain orientation is key to a successful hand plane. I used mostly hand tools to create this aside from a few early bandsaw cuts.
