Drill station

Simple little drill charging station with added drill storage. Still need to get a power strip for cord control. Have some 3D printed holders for the batteries on the side.

This is based on several versions from YouTube. Here are my detailed plans 🤣🤣🤣

Nice for organizing what usually is a mess!

LBD will be proud of the battery holders!

Only thing I see is a lot of times (in movies), a car smashes through the wall forcing someone back against the far wall and onto all the protruding pointy drill bits exposed! Not as much as being run over by a bus while crossing the street, but still....

I'd also suggest a timer on the power strip. The cheap mechanical type of yore is what I use and I have it set to run for 1 hour daily.
Some chargers (newer Lithium batteries) are good at shutting down after charging but older chargers will trickle charge constantly which generally is hard on batteries.
If I plan on using the tools a lot for a day and expect to need several charge cycles, I'll just press the timer "on" button to keep 'em all topped up until I'm done.
nice drill station. i see you do your plans like i do. good idea making it bigger than the current need. it will fill up !

working with my hands is a joy,it gives me a sense of fulfillment, somthing so many seek and so few find.-SAM MALOOF.

If I don't keep them on the chargers, then no issue? I tend to charge and then remove them. Don't like leaving anything plugged in.
Thanks guys. Trying to get organized!
Nice Barb. My drills are handle down.

I have a pin nailer in mine as well.

My chargers are still a mess.

With lithium batteries, the best charging schedule is to charge to 80% and discharge to 20%. Of course these chargers don't usually indicate state of charge
Your schedule is fine, basically the same as using a timer except you gotta remember to plug them back in occasionally.

Having them all on a power strip at least allows one switch to power them all.

That's interesting. I guess I charge to 100% and then use, often until the battery goes dead.
A lot of the newer smart batteries take this stuff into account. When the battery feels ‘dead’ it’s just the smart battery pulling back power to you don’t ruin the battery by taking it too low. I know, with the Dewalts, they tell you to swap out batteries as soon as you notice a difference in the tool’s speed/power. Although, I think some of that is to reduce cycle time on the charger and have the battery back topped up before the next one runs out. I know on my small batteries I can’t install deck boards fast enough to run down the current battery before the previously used one is charged up. Battery technology is one of the next major innovations in the world.

Ryan/// ~sigh~ I blew up another bowl. Moke told me "I made the inside bigger than the outside".

Very nice design, well made, looks good and gets the job done. Kudos.
RyanGi- some of the Dewalt batteries are older so not sure how smart they are. I like cordless in some ways but not so much the added step of the chargers, etc.

Thank you Oldtool. Slowly trying to get things more organized.
Real nice drill station. I like your drawings to determine all the dimensions!!!!!!!!!!!! I do the same thing all the time!!!!!

Cool BB1... and as Slinter alluded to... nice exposure to 3D printing in the workshop.

8 slots... I will never advocate the adage of "you can't have enough drills", however, in spite of a quick change bits, a few dedicated ones

are a blessing in disguise.... though mine are nowhere as neatly organised.

If your first cut is too short... Take the second cut from the longer end... LBD

Jim - thanks! Drawing things out just works. That's after I work out the idea in my mind for a couple of days!

LBD - thank you! Also used Dominos to connect the sides and back to the shelf, although did use pocketholes to connect the sides to the back as those won't show.
Very nice Barb. I need to make me one of those. Mine will only hold a couple though I think.

Andy -- Old Chinese proverb say: If you think something can't be done, don't interrupt man who is doing it.

Thanks Brit. Considering I had clamps temporarily in a plastic bin and in random locations during my shop reorganization, anything in one known spot is an upgrade!
Nice build Barb. Hopefully you don't so what I did and picked up more tools than I could store. It's the batteries that use up the extra room.
George - another downside of cordless is dealing with chargers and multiple batteries. I do like convenience but the reliability of corded is still attractive.
Nice organization there BB1...Its a given so many of our shop tools ect. end up on a flat surface in the way. So nice to get them out of the way.

Jeff

Jeff - thanks! The journey toward better organization continues. 🙂
