Frame for a painting

A good friend of mine bought this painting at a fund raiser and he gave it to me on Sunday after church. I told him I'd build a frame for the painting. I assume the inspiration for the piece is Matthew 10:29-31 and the song "His Eye is on the Sparrow" (here's a link to that song I found on YouTube).

The painting is 8x10 and I thought it would look nice with a larger frame. I ended up buying a cheap frame with a mat - used the glass and mat and will see what use I might have for the cheap plastic frame (haha...nah, I build frames!!). I had a walnut board that had a pretty good section of straight grain, so I got my pieces from that. The frame inside dimension is 11 x14 and the frame is about 1.5 inches wide. I left the pieces pretty thick (around an inch) and I like the "heftiness" of the frame. The mitered corners came together nicely, but I still added some walnut splines for added insurance given this is a larger frame. Routered in a keyhole slot on the back. Hope to drop the finished project off soon.

Not many pictures as it was too hot in my shop so here's what I have.

Nicely done. Gotta love that Walnut!
Thank you everyone. I agree that the painting is so nicely done. The artist is very gifted. Just delivered the frame to my friend and he was happy with how it turned out. He's not sure if he'll keep it or donate it back to the fundraiser next year.

It looks nice! I like the continuous grain:)

No name noobie here

YRTi - thank you. The pieces were not fully from a continuous piece but the arrangement ended up looking ok. I thought the relatively straight grain would work to not distract from the painting.
Very nice frame Barb, that is beautiful wood. I especially like the key hole slot for hanging, good thinking.
Thank you Oldtool. Hard to go wrong with walnut. I actually have a small old benchtop router table setup with my keyhole slot bit - pretty quick and easy.
Nice frame. I too like the keyhole slot.

Barb,

Nice frame.  Keyhole slot for hanging is cool.  I want to do that also.

gdaveg - thank you. Pretty sure the keyhole bit I use is one from Rockler. I use a table top setup and should note that I add the keyhole after the frame is fully assembled. Previously I would make the slots on the side pieces before assembly - after one time where the small piece caught and flew across the shop, I learned to wait until "done" so there was a better surface and area to hold the project.
Nicely done!

Ryan/// ~sigh~ I blew up another bowl. Moke told me "I made the inside bigger than the outside".
