Mobile air filter cart

After watching many YouTube videos (including Jay Bates, Ron Calverley, Frank Howarth and others), this is my version on the furnace blower air filter cart.
Basic frame is 2x4 with rabbets to hold the filters. The top is 3/4 particleboard that has a type of laminate on the outer faces (cheapest option at Menards...think it was around $15 compared to $30 for 2x4 foot plywood). Filters (20x20x1) are held in place by clips I printed on my Bambu, as are the handles, and cord storage.

The blower is wired at the lowest setting which is plenty as the filters are definitely held in place even without the clips when it's running. There is storage underneath, plus I wanted the outflow to be elevated to avoid stirring up dust on the floor. The height matches my tablesaw, and having the extra horizontal surface is great. I edged the top in white oak for durability and because the edging looks nice. Had to round the edges due to a miscalculation, but actually better than a sharp corner for me to bump into! Just works out ok sometime.

Really happy with how the cart turned out, both the filter function and the added mobile horizontal surface.

Neat solution and great write up... you're fortunate to have the footprint in the shop and the clearance to move it around... kudos for shop made as well.
I just don't have the footprint nor the techo_know to make my own, so my bought ones just hang  aground  around.

BUT.... UGH... pocket holes for an owner of a Domino!

If your first cut is too short... Take the second cut from the longer end... LBD

I really like this!

I have a very similar blower, but limited floor space. I might have to make that without wheels and use wings instead. Wish I could fly like LBD, 'twould be easier to hang.
Pretty slick, nice work!

live to tell the stories, they sound better that way

Well done! I don't have much floor space, so I have a Wen filter hanging from the rafters.

Looks great, Barb! Making it match your table saw’s height was a good idea, as are the onboard filter storage and cord wrap. Is that grate over the outflow opening a cooling rack?
LBD - well, pocketholes have a place in my shop! I did use my Domino for the end oak pieces on the top.  Side edging was narrow so just glued that...with plenty of clamps!

Splintergroup- thanks. I love the added area for assembly, etc.

Woodbutcherbynight - thanks! Took a while to figure out what would work best, but brainstorming with my husband and all the YouTube videos, a plan finally came together.

Dark_Lightning- thank you! I gained floor space after we moved our workout equipment indoors.

Ron - thanks! I had a register vent cover but it seemed a bit too much so I bought a cooling rack to keep anyone from reaching into the blower. Printed the clips, and it's held nicely in place. If this doesn't work out over time I can search for other alternatives. The blower opening is right by the top so wanted to avoid impeding the air flow.
Also did a quick print of brackets that hold a filter on a regular box fan. Will see how that works.

Barb, the cooling rack seems like a good choice to me. It looks sturdy, and it won’t block the airflow.
That is a very nice design and build on that cart!!! A lot of thought went into it!!!!!!!!!!!

all around nice work barbs !!!!

working with my hands is a joy,it gives me a sense of fulfillment, somthing so many seek and so few find.-SAM MALOOF.

If you have sufficient surface area, a beautiful and effective solution.

Nice Barb

It doubles as an assembly bench

Nice, Barb! I especially like the extra horizontal surface that I would've had completely filled in record time.

May you have the day you deserve!

Nice, well thought out prior building to provide additional benefits. Good work.
Thanks everyone! The horizontal surface was used as the cart was in progress. Glad we went with this design rather than a more vertical "tower" as some have used (obviously that's a good option if floor space is limited).

With the minisplit in place really wanted to deal with dust. I do have a Jet scrubber up above and added a pre-filter above the MS (does not seem to impact the air flow with 4" filters).
In addition the wall fans also have 4 inch filters (these help circulate air into and out of the side room). One of those is shown in the first picture.

Still to come is dealing with the mitersaw. Working on a plan to add a box and just better setup overall. Currently have a cardboard box in place that I was using to get an idea of dimensions (actually that helps already).

Nice cart, Barb. And it’s always great to have the extra outfeed surface…

Ryan/// ~sigh~ I blew up another bowl. Moke told me "I made the inside bigger than the outside".

Well done BB should keep the air clean as long as you remember to turn it on.   Like the Duck, DL have an old Delta hanging from the ceiling.   Sometimes even turn it on.

Ron

Your air is going to be clean enough for a semiconductor plant.  Nicely done.

Thanks guys! Cleaner air + more work surface makes this woodworker happy!
After our exchanger was worked on and the kid left, I noticed he'd wired it for high. It had always been on medium.

I pulled the unit and swapped the wiring around, after finding the color code on line.

It dawned on me a switch to move between speeds without having to pull wire nuts would be nice. To that end, I bought a wafer switch (four layers, one for each circuit and the bottom was for a fourth speed or off) sized for the load.  I wired the inputs together and soldered them, then soldered the high, medium and low wires to their own wafer section.

The switch is handy, to be able to move more air in the heat of summer, and something I'll be using on my air scrubber. (I save many of my used 5" x 20" x 20" filters to that end.

The only thing I regret is, I added an off position. Not a problem for me, but someone else might make that selection. Too lazy to remedy that.
