Bed frame

This project started five years ago when I began milling boards from white oak lumber grown on my parents-in-law's property. I used my homemade chainsaw jig to mill 2'' (50mm) thick planks from two oak logs. These planks were then left to dry in a barn for three years. I then set up a surface planing jig to roughly plane the boards, which were then left to dry for another year in my house. Afterward, I used a thickness planer to process the boards to a final thickness of roughly 1''(30mm).The boards were laid out, and I started planning which board should be used where to get a good visual appearance. The bed frame is a simple "box" construction which allows the two mattresses to rest on top, and as a bonus, there is storage below which is accessed by flipping the beds up at the foot end (the head end has bed hinges installed). I used special bed rail fittings (to be able to take the frame apart) and adjusted them carefully so that when tightened, any gaps between the boards were eliminated.The oak is treated with a slightly white-pigmented hard wax oil (Osmo) to keep it from getting a yellow tint as the oak ages. A fairy LED string is attached below the beds and lights up the oak grain before bedtime. This adds a nice diffuse light which is easy on the eyes when it is dark.
It was such a rewarding experience to build this project completely from scratch, right from milling my own lumber!
