Lots of veterans build or acquire a shadowbox to show their time in service. This is my version. I started thinking about making a coat hanger, and it blossomed into this. We do this for ourselves. This is me, for me and by me, given to me and graciously accepted by me. It's not all of me, just a glimpse.
I used another piece of Uncle Henry's hemlock. I hot glued it to a piece of scrap plywood and got it flat and level in the drum sander , cut it into strips and reassembled it somewhat in the manner of a cutting board.
The big stick of mahogany was used almost as found.
I did clean this up some before gluing it in place. There are 4 internal dowel rods holding all this together.
The base of the rack was too easy, but strong as need be. That is where I started, I created a level starting point, held the big stick in place with the end vise, and drilled and screwed the 2 bottom hand screws. The top 2 just help spread out the contact with the floor, those are not screwed to the big stick.
This hat saved my life. I was wearing it when I went over the handlebars and landed headfirst on the street. Many moons ago. a
The old schoolhouse coat hook was a yard sale item. It hung in my garage holding this jacket forever. I had the jacket relined and had fatigue patches sold on, rode it like that a lot of miles. The bling was in many hiding places I use over the years. I rounded it all up and it found a new home here.
Overall 5"9" tall, the same as me.

Nice build Hairy. A storage place for your special stuff. That headgear favors you, I've seen it in other of your work, but first I remember it's story.
