Better Late than Never

So, about a year ago my wife emailed me for a link on Amazon with a pic of a garbage can (attached as last pic) that she wanted to buy to replace our plastic and steel kitchen waste basket. I told her that I could make something like it in an afternoon out of the scrap pine I had. The year dragged on and I never seemed to find the time to build it. As this past winter arrived and my woodworking started to pick up again I began to give the project some thought…and realized that copying a pine waste basket from Amazon was not what I wanted to spend my time doing….my woodworking time is limited and I want to spend it making projects that I enjoy, not just out of utility. So, I made a few design changes. I’m not sure how I happened upon the final design, other than I wanted to use quarter-sawn white oak, and the rest just kind of flowed from that.

Wood was finished with a coat of tung oil, followed by a coat of shellac, then a dark gel stain which was quickly wiped off to accentuate the pores. Finished then with a few coats of wipe on poly and a coat of paste wax.

It’s a very nice garbage can. You were right in choosing your way.
It’s always more rewarding.

Great story, wonderful piece. It gives we an idea for a laundry basket. Well done.
