BIG RULER

Started making this big ruler with the grand kids last weekend but run out of time and thought today would be a good time to finish it .
Started with a laminated pine shelf 16” x96” and cut it in half lengthwise so we could make two rulers 6’ 4” and have enough material for the numbers at the end of the board .

I had a buddy print out the numbers for us and glued them to the board .
We taped up the ruler board with painters tape and made a mark every two inches and then marked out with a sliding square making the half foot and foot marks longer .
The next step was to cut the tape along the mark out lines again using the sliding square and removing the tape from the marks that would be painted .
While the paint was drying I cut out the numbers on the band saw and sanded them smooth with my spindle and disc sander and finishing the parts by hand this was followed by routing the edges with a bevel bit in my laminate trimmer and painting .
When the paint was dry I removed all the tape and glued on the numbers and cut a oblong hole near the top for a hanger , a coat of stain and that is it .
Quick and fun project with the kids in the shop and something they can take home and hang it in their room and record their growth .

Cool project Klaus it really measures up :))

Very nice, like the cut out numbers, great touch. That’s the difference between a woodworker, and some one that throws things together to make a dollar!

That’s awesome. The first picture was in the yard and thought, this guy must have some giant tomatoes or something! LOL. What a great project.

A fun project and nicely done too Klaus. I probably should have made one of these to measure the rainfall here this year.

Any project done with grand kids is a winner all around. Having a piece that they will pass down is a great bonus.

I agree with Thorreain, anything with the grandkids with a heritage piece pass down, PRICELESS!!!!! Very well done.

Really a nice piece and great for the grandkids. Before I read the text I thought maybe you would put in the middle of the yard so you could measure snowfall without going outside.

Jack

Great way to measure growth.
