Wine Rack

Last week I saw a wine rack I really liked, and decided to make my own version. Mine is made from 8/4 Cherry and 4/4 Walnut that happened to have a bit of figure in it. Figured it would make a nice accent. The pieces that hold the wine bottles are paver steaks from Home Depot, cut down with an angle grinder to a more appropriate length. The Cherry I had wasn’t wide enough to do the entire piece, and I was being lazy, and didn’t want to edge join two pieces together, so I cut rabbets into two pieces of cherry, and attached them with a baltic birch plywood backer board to get the width I wanted. I then cut the walnut to fit between the cherry and cover the plywood. I mounted the walnut with magnets, so that it can be removed to access the mounting points, and hide them once hung. I kind of like the result, and that middle board could easily be replaced with glass tile, a painted piece of plywood with lettering on it, stone tile for a backsplash…all kinds of options.

I didn’t really consider wood movement until after the fact, but that could be overcome easily enough with some additional rabbets, leaving a reveal between the center piece and the two sides. Only issue would be that the center piece would have to either slide down or up to access the mounting holes. Next time… We’ll see if this one holds up for now.

Thanks for looking, and have a great weekend!

Great design, I like the replacing option. Well done David.

Cool design,I really don’t see any wood movement issues ?

Thanks everyone.
Jim, you might be right. The cherry is screwed to the plywood backer and the walnut just sits snugly in between with the magnets holding it in. My concern was the walnut expanding into the cherry, but maybe its fine.

Excellent creativity. The walnut in the middle with options is quite unique. The rail spikes are an interesting touch as well. Very nicely done.
