Pirate Chest Toy Box

When my daughter told me that she was having a boy and his bedroom was going to be pirate themed, I decided to make him a toy box that looked like a pirate chest. Simple enough, or so I thought. The design in my head, as a very new woodworker, had to be changed multiple times and it ended up weighing about 70 lbs. The final version of the lid was actually the fourth one I made. I learned may valuable lessons on this one, primarily about reducing weight when building. It’s construction is pretty basic but I added a false tray inside the top of the box to hide the toys so when it’s opened it looks like a full treasure chest. I used a combination of glue and lots and lots of poly to basically cement all the coins and jewels to the bottom of the tray so Mom won’t have to pick up 800 or so pieces of plastic every day. I think it turned out pretty good.

That’s great. Lots of really nice pirates chests lately. Great idea with gluing down the booty but believe me, he’ll find a way to dig them out by age 2! Nice work.

Bill T. Just be sure to make the lid first and then build the box to fit it and not the other way around.
Brian: I glued it down and then literally poured a quart of poly over the entire surface. He’ll need a jack hammer to get those things loose.
