Originally my desk was a roll top my dad bought for me when I got married. I always liked the finish. It had a color that looked great on quarter sawn oak. After trying all the colors of stain that I could find, I gave up. Then I had some mahogany that I used aniline dye on to get a dark color without the muddy look you get from oil based stain.
I finally stumbled on a combination that has the look I wanted. I mixed a powder dye, half orange and half lemon yellow. After it was applied I sanded the orange and applied a Minwax Dark Walnut. I hope these pictures show what I’m talking about.

Great finish technique . Looks great .
It looks like you came up with a technique that really works. Matching finishes is tough work. You did well!
