Kicking off the Woodturning forum with this 12" d. Claro Walnut bowl; the thinnest bowl I’ve turned so far.

Very cool! From a newbee, just how long do you need to “age” or dry a piece before turning it?
Got the lathe, but usually just buy aged wood to turn…

Thanks again everyone. Mike, drying wood is a standard 1 yr. per inch thickness for air drying, but lots of wood turners love to ‘turn green,’ by shaping, reversing, and hollowing to a thick wall, then letting a bowl sit in a paper bag with chips to slow its drying, and then re-turning it to final shape after it’s had some time to ‘settle’, or show how much it will alter. There are lots of methods, but green, wet wood is a turner’s very sloppy friend (buy a plastic shower curtain if you’re going to turn freshly harvested wood. That’s a hint.)
