Beginner's Guide to Sharpening Western Saws

Back in 2013 on another site I wrote a blog series documenting my journey restoring a load of 19th and 20th century saws. I'm not going to move all of that work to this site. However after I'd restored all the saws, I needed to know how to sharpen them so I taught myself to do that. In an effort to help others acquire this skill, I recorded a video called Sharpening Western Saws where I cover all the tools needed and how you go about it. You then get to look over my shoulder as I sharpen 4 saws. The video is 2 1/4 hours long, so don't bother if you're not serious about learning how to do it. If you have any questions, I'll try and answer them. Enjoy!

As I recall, this was a hugely useful video. And I still haven’t got my saw-sharpening vise set up, let alone the whole sharpening bench I’d like to have. Too many projects.

May you have the day you deserve!

I've watched it more than once.  It's superbly useful!
I have watched this several times.  Thanks for posting it here.  It will be a great resource.
still the best sharpening video available.

I marked it to watch later. I have all the files and vise. I have done one rip and one crosscut but have much anxiety over whether I am doing it perfect.
I found this on YouTube a while back & watched the full 2 hours & 15 minutes. I found this very helpful, started sharpening my two saws immediately, and they work quite well yet today.
I also used this information when I re-toothed a cheap big box store dovetail saw that was crap, and now use it in my homemade kerfing saw - https://www.lumberjocks.com/showcase/kerfing-plane.82673/
Thanks for sharing.
You're very welcome. Hope it was of some use.
