At long last the cigar boxes are finally finished. The Lids Assembly The BIC spring loaded hinge pivot points were assembled Apart from a little reworking drilling the lids deeper to ensure they retracted enabling them to be removed All went well. Masking tape on the drill ensured "precision" Next came the shooting of dowels around the yard trying to assemble them! Sometimes it pays to have decent claws! with a little recalcitrant episodes all fitted up well. Alignment However as you can see they did not close flush, this not being good enough all were dismantled and the Box frame milled to get a flush fit. I used a dovetail bit to ensure I didn't cut into the box edge sides and then tidied up with a chisel
I had to do all boxes as there was a 2 x times veneer increase in size after veneering, so the lips remained bare timber. This completes the project final picture will be in a Project post Acknowledgements Along the way I encountered considerable Re learning Veneering and as a result of attempting to veneer thin material on three surfaces and produce perfect results, unfortunately trying to get defect free results were a little beyond my skills, ... advice from other members supported my efforts to continue and for that I thank you. Looking closely you will see various chips and defects of which I attempted to recover but some stayed as a reminder its a very meticulous and skillful activity. Thank you all
Hope no harm to any free-range food running around your neighborhood. Those spring loaded dowel chuckers can put an eye out!
Good work on hiding any oopsies, I can hear the satisfying thunk of the lid closing flush after the trim job.
Fun Fact: Along with the precision and ease of using tape as a drill depth indicator, the extended flap will sweep away sawdust as you reach the prescribed depth.
