Built a chest for the butcher block top and vise that I bought many years ago at Rockler. The bench top was mounted on a different stand and has seen a fair amount of use and abuse over the years. The blue paint in the gouges is the color I painted my since-sold '68 Buick Skylark hot rod. The carcass is maple turning blanks I got on the cheap from the local Habitat ReStore. My end grain cutting board came from that same batch of sticks. What appears to be the back is actually a shear panel that is the back stop for the oak carving chest. This is where I intend to leave it. The spaces to the sides of the chest will be for project storage. I'll eventually build some storage bins or shelves on the other side (not shown) of that shear panel. I used 3/8" lag screws, glue and drywall screws. Heavy as all get-out, but that's on purpose. I looked for benches online in case I wanted to be lazy, but I already had the top and the maple. Besides, those new ones aren't any heavier. I have yet to drill holes for dogs and hold fasts.
