Retreading the till…

I picked up a couple new-to-me babies and did some shuffling with what I wanted to keep in the till, so I needed to rebuild the divider section. Luckily, I was smart enough to foresee doing this at some point, so all the dividers were just screwed into place. I had intended on using the same piece of ply from the original build, but I couldn’t get it cleaned up enough to make me happy. And I knew seeing all the open screw holes was going to get under my skin, so I dropped a new piece of 1/2” ply into place (after staining it to give a little contrast this time).

I also replaced the front ledger, which was also screwed in. It’s got hand cut recesses in it to receive the back end of the tote on the smaller planes. Not really necessary to cut in those pockets, but it does make for a much more solid ‘seat’ when the planes go back into the till. A half-round iwasaki makes quick work of it.

The hardest part was figuring out which planes to leave out of the lineup. I don’t have nearly as many as many of you all, but enough that I have to make choices!

I also sunk a 1/2” disc magnet into the corner for the plane iron screw driver to live on. 👍🏼

I tossed in a pic at the end that shows the rear of the till, since the French cleat option came up in discussion recently.

Nice Ryan!

So the bottom strip prevent them from tilting out on their own (you need to lift the plane)?

It's bigger, but looks like you'll need to go further if the collection grows 8^)
Yeah, the bottom plate of the till is actually that lighter colored strip across the bottom..the slightly darker strip is only about a half inch deep and creates a ‘curb’ for the tails of the larger planes to sit behind. The small pockets I cut in with the rasp for the smaller planes are angled towards the back of the till, so the totes want to slide down that pocket and deeper into the till. Removing a plane is really just tipping it back towards you, then lifting it out. Really, it’s about getting the angle of the till right…gravity keeps the planes in place on its own. Everything else is really just insurance…

I've been working out my till plans in my mind for a few year now. Some neat ideas here!
That looks good Ryan, the French cleats work like a charm.

Main Street to the Mountains

Yup, I’m a big fan of the cleat wall. In my next shop I’ll have a much bigger one!

+1+1... for the Till.

How many Fe$tools can one fit in that till... SketchitUp for Fe$tool friendly!

If your first cut is too short... Take the second cut from the longer end... LBD

Ryan,

Thanks for sharing.  Jealous of your till and planes.

Petey

Thanks Petey. My planes are a mish-mash and others have much nicer sets, but I like them!

Very nice Ryan. Isn't it great to have your planes to hand like that, easy out, easy in. I love it.

Easy to reach and also pretty to look at. I’m a sucker for displayed vintage tools in a shop.

yeah me too. I don't why it took me so long to do it.

Nice Cabinet Ryan and a great collection of Planes.

Very nice setup, like Stanley planes.
Thank you. I’ma pre-war Stanley fan, but I gotta tell you my little Sargent 407 has become a go-to plane for me. Tiny, but really perfect for making things fit!

Nice design and well done planning for the future
Thanks, but it’s filled again…I need more room if I’m gonna get a second till….but then, I don’t need one…yet…
