Steering wheel for 1963 Corvette

I used an old cheap foam steering wheel I had laying around for the core. I cut 18 sections to form the wheel and another set of splines to go between all the sections. I had an accident and ruined a couple of sections while using the router and had to re-register everything to make the repair. I was surprised I was able to fix the mistake because everything had to be in the same place exactly or the wheel wouldn't be round or uniform.

Wow, that's nice! I bought an aftermarket steering wheel for my '70 Chevy truck, but one of the splices split. I was thinking about doing something like this, but I also want less dish.

nice work.

working with my hands is a joy,it gives me a sense of fulfillment, somthing so many seek and so few find.-SAM MALOOF.

You did well with that steering wheel, well done.

FYI, hose clamps work nicely to squeeze the glue joints together. Not saying you should have done that, but for future projects.

Gorgeous steering wheel for sure.
The money shot is the last photo, you can never have too many clamps 👍

That looks like a fun project. I bet it is nice to use as well.
Very cool!

Ryan/// ~sigh~ I blew up another bowl. Moke told me "I made the inside bigger than the outside".

Thanks Steve it was a learning project for sure. I made the wheel smaller than the car would normally have (14" instead of 16"). There is a company that makes reproductions and they get $1500, a real one is even more.

Thanks Ryan

Nice job,  and good fix.
I'm sure there was a lot of stress making this.
You overcame the challenge,  I like that.

Figuring out how to do something you have never done is what makes a good challenge.

Is a 1962 Square?

If your first cut is too short... Take the second cut from the longer end... LBD
