Paying it back

A friends father has a small sawmill in the country and gave me a few boards the other day. Some burl walnut, spalted poplar, cherry, and a couple of boards I can't identify, but have quite a bit of spalting. I wanted to make him something as a thank you and this was the result.

I had never made anything before with such acute angles and I had to make a jig to be able to cut it on my table saw. I used Watco dark walnut oil and then finished it with several coats of lacquer, sanding between each coat. I also tried to book match as much as I could for symmetry. I'm pleased with the results and it was fun to get away from rectangles and square boxes.

I also had some fun with the top by creating a place for my logo which appears to be floating, then I wrapped it with a strip of Padauk to make it pop and add a bit of color. The box is about 10" tall by 3" wide. I was nervous milling such small pieces on the table saw and had to create a few different jigs to make sure I had all ten fingers when I was finished.

If your first cut is too short... Take the second cut from the longer end... LBD
