A Few Ideas For The Shop

I like to see pics of other's shops, and sometimes I pick up a few ideas that help work flow or organization. I thought I would post a few pics of my basement shop and how I try to make the most of what I have to work with.
See if you have any suggestions on how I could do anything better, and maybe even pick up something I've done that might help you.

I'm a little crazy when it comes to having a place for everything in my shop. I used to have my screws in the boxes they came in and bits for my screwdrivers/drill were in a small container that I always had to dig through to find the bit I needed. I added a drawer to my work bench out of scrap/recycled wood. I can find what I need easier than before and it's easy to grab a box of screws and bring it to where I need them.

I made a holder for my sander so that I could keep it all together with the dust hose. It makes it easier to put away, I just have to pull it down and plug it in to my dust collection.

The best thing I did was paint the edges of my blast gates so I could tell from across the shop if it was closed or open. I have 8 blast gates and I often forget to close the gate and had to check them all if I thought I had another gate open. Now red means closed and green means open. Saves a lot of steps.

I store my long lumber by hanging it from the ceiling. It keeps it out of my way and it's easy to see what I've got.

I removed a plastic plug from my bandsaw and made a plug out of scrap to anchor my light. It's very sturdy and it helps my old eyes see what I'm doing.

I made this dust/air cleaner out of cardboard with a box fan and filter. I hung it from the ceiling joist with bungie cords to prevent vibration transfer. I'm sure it's not as good as the real thing, but it does catch a lot of dust that escapes my large 2 stage dust collector.

Some great ideas, the bench drawer is something I could use.

I love all your storage ideas.  I especially like your ceiling lumber storage with the boards on edge so you don't have to lift the stack to get the board you want.
Here's how I store small amounts of hardware in baby food containers.

The following idea came from This Old House magazine about 25 years ago.  At the time I thought it was brilliant, except that it used glass jars.  I was smarter than that and saved plastic ones until I had enough to make it.

I never posted it because it's not as brilliant as it looks.  First of all, I'm short so I have to use a step ladder to reach it.  Second, if all the jars aren't weighted similarly, it swings around while trying to unscrew the jar I want.

Good ideas, John! Thanks for sharing.

May you have the day you deserve!

Those are some neat ideas! Thanks for sharing.

I think the idea is great, but only if you can reach it. Did you ever consider turning it on it's side and hanging it on the wall, or make a lazy Susan type base.

I like that red and green on the exchaust pipe.

Good food for thought. Thanks.

The problem is more with the imbalance of the contents than with the location.  If it could be balanced better, it could work well in any of those locations.  Our workshop walls are concrete which doesn't make for easy mounting and I won't give up my bench space.
