Two layers of Cherry each 1/2" thick. Layers are cross grain to each other to help with any distortion. The Knot is 7 inches across by 6 1/4" tall. Inside cut on the Scroll Saw and the outside cut on the band saw. Both old Deltas. Outside edge sanded on 1 inch belt sander, easy to do, top and bottom sanded on 4 inch belt sander. Now the problem was sanding the interior of the knot. 1/2" wide space with closed ends. Used 1/2" wide belts for scroll saw that worked okay, took awhile. They tended to wear out quickly. Finish is 2 coats of poly.
The Celtic Triple Spiral Tiskelle Knot dates back over 3000 years. First found at Newgrange in Ireland. Some believe the 3 spirals represent birth, life and afterlife. Another is Mind, Body and Soul. Other interpretations are Land, Sea and Sky. The spirals are also called the legs. No one is sure.
Will be used as a trivet or a simple wall decoration.
So many things revolve around a trinity in Celtic culture. Of course many modern things have evolved with modern Irish culture as extensions (i.e. wine, women, and song 🙂)
I've used these designs on crosses and they are popular, too bad they are a bummer to sand out the centers!
Like the trinity of Wine, Women and Song. Think this one was used by a couple of Kings in the 1200 ad era on shields and such. Not sure, am not a scholar on Celtic things or much of anything else.
Ron, A lot of work went into that masterpiece! You could make them for a living. At $750.00 each, they should sell like hotcakes! Recipients of such lovely work often don't realize just how much labor went into it. It really is lovely. L/W
