PPE Cabinet

Once my tool cabinet was upgraded I needed to find room for several things that were on the former shelves in there – specifically my respirators, hearing protection and safety glasses. Also, pottz had posted a project to hold his box of disposable gloves. So it was time to build a cabinet for my Personal Protection Equipment (PPE).

I had a piece of cherry and couple small ¼” panels of curly maple. I found the curly maple first. The panels were not very big and were going to need to be used for a smaller project – like this one. And if I was going to use curly maple then I needed to go for the cherry! A few hours of design time and I was ready to build. I was so focused on this build that I forgot to take any pictures along the way.

The cabinet is roughly 13”x23” and 7” deep. I added a couple of center rails to the doors since the maple panels were a bit short. I think it looks better than a single panel on each door.

The case is 9/16” thick and the shelves are 7/16” thick. The black hinges are 1.5” tall.

I decided to hang my shop glasses on the handles. I found this latch while browsing on Amazon.

I used 4 coats of General Finishes wipe on varnish.

I hung the cabinet where I had my paper towel roll hanging so I made a vertical towel holder. I used some of the cherry cutoffs.

I have to admit that this is as nice (if not nicer) than cabinets in the house. But it really looks good in the shop and I spend a lot of time in there. The whole project took less than 40 hours.

Update: James had asked about a view of the handles. I thought I should add that here in the description. They are held in place with a single screw.

That looks really nice,  I like that wood combination.
Great work.

Figuring out how to do something you have never done is what makes a good challenge.

Exceptional work, Steve.  Great selection of materials.  Well done.

Woe unto thee when the shop starts to look nicer than the kitchen! Spouses tend to find work for you to do in the house as penance!

Fine piece Steve!
nothing wrong with having nice shop cabinets, as you say, you spend a lot of time in there, why not make it enjoyable.

working with my hands is a joy,it gives me a sense of fulfillment, somthing so many seek and so few find.-SAM MALOOF.

That is a fine cabinet, and great storage Steve. The double doors look great.

The cabinet is gorgeous and the finish is very beautiful!

That looks great, Steve.  What a perfect use for smaller pieces of curly maple.  Well done.
A nice protection for your PPE. Can we call it a PPPE?
Well done Steve!

Thanks for the comments everyone!

Splinter - I might have some work in my future.😁
Beautiful Steve!  Love Cherry and Maple.  Especially when the Maple is figured 😎
That looks great Steve. The doors are even book matched. Where did you get the panels?

You lined up the hinges perfectly. Where did you buy them? Their dark color of the hinges and the latch compliments the cherry nicely.

Beautiful work!

Ryan/// ~sigh~ I blew up another bowl. Moke told me "I made the inside bigger than the outside".

That’s a very attractive cabinet, Steve. Using multiple panels per door was a nice save for the too-short curly maple pieces. I think it looks better than single panels would have too.
That's a dandy setup for handy safe keeping and cleanness, cabinet is very nice, Good job.

Nice...too nice!  😉 Now my random boxes and tupperware-type storage options seem totally inadequate (and tossing my mask on my work table at the end of a shop session even worse). 🙄

If your first cut is too short... Take the second cut from the longer end... LBD

Nice.  As a person who manages a OBGYN / fertility medical clinic, PPE takes on a different meaning.  Masks and gloves dominate our storage cabinet but we also have sample collection containers among other things like sanitation materials.  Love the storage cabinet.

That's a very nice looking cabinet Steve.
That curly maple really pops out at you.
Cool cabinet eRasmus...

Would you have treated those precious equipment with such reverence if it wasn't for C19?
