Mission Oak Bed

This project was for one of my good customers who has since moved to Colorado. She wanted a queen size Mission Oak bed from a picture in a JC penney catalog showing bedding but I could only see less than half the picture and had to develop the rest of the look. It is made from red oak and finished with Zar #120 Teak Natural stain and sprayed with Watco clear lacquer. It has 90 square spindles and steel lock brackets in the posts to lock the rails. I had to stand on top of the deck to rout the ends of the rails for the hook brackets. The cross braces have feet on them for center support of the mattress which makes if very solid.

This is the only place I had in the basement big enough to set this up for a picture.

The one thing she wanted was to have it match the wood in a very old nightstand which was red oak with hickory pulls. So the top caps of the post on this bed are hickory . I had to take the 85" rails to a friend's shop to run through his Jointer because all I had at the time was 24" long one. I now have a 55" Grizzly jointer!!

The one real hectic moment was getting all the spindles to fit into the head board and foot board rails during the gluing process. I did stain all the spindles and rails before installing them to save having to stain in all those corners.

I'm sorry I did not have in process shots

She was totally happy with it!.

Quite the project Jim, looks fantastic!

I've suffered through your spindle/glueup dilemma, albeit with only maybe 10 at most, I feel your pain 😫

One thing that helped was to punch some holes through a piece of cardboard that held all the spindles in alignment. Made it a snap to get everyone into the top rail mortices before the glue passed it's shelf life date. The cardboard could then be cut out.
yeah thats a spindle nightmare. bed looks beautiful jim.

working with my hands is a joy,it gives me a sense of fulfillment, somthing so many seek and so few find.-SAM MALOOF.

Yes impressive work.

I usually ask when someone says can you build this (from a photo)? I ask why don't you buy that one?

Glad the lady like it

Amazing - for getting the glue-up done (alone no less!) and for a great outcome.  Had to be really rewarding to present the final project.
Very nice work, the finish looks great. I would love to have that bed myself!
