Two Birdhouses

I made two bird houses- one for  out by the barn and one for McKinlee to take to her house. The first one is pine because it is to be painted. She wanted it striped but settled for blue today. The second one is mahogany made from scraps that have be laying in the barn for years. All the hinges and screws are stainless and the tops open for cleaning
They were put together with dowels to register the location so it is much easier to glue assemble. McKinlee does not like the loud machinery so I let her do all the gluing . She got right to it and did a fine job.
I coated both houses on the outside only  with Boiled Linseed oil, but I painted hers blue before she took it home today.

Cheers, Jim

Fun project!

Ryan/// ~sigh~ I blew up another bowl. Moke told me "I made the inside bigger than the outside".

oh jim what a cool project, with a real cutie ! it dont get any better my friend !

working with my hands is a joy,it gives me a sense of fulfillment, somthing so many seek and so few find.-SAM MALOOF.

Great project for a kid. Hope a bird uses it for her.

I liked the slanted "stairs" inside. I usually just staple a piece of window screen there so the fledglings can climb out.
This is the true joy in any craft, working with young apprentices, passing on the skills. Nice!
I think she made the bird houses and Jim is taking the credit.    Really nice looking bird houses, fun project.   Well maybe Jim did some of the work.

Bird housed are alway fun.  Unfortunately no birds seem to like my idea of a home.  Only one was used and it was made out of a gourd.  Yours will probably fair better!
Great little project Jim, and you have a cute helper, always a treasure when the little ones are in the shop to help out.

Bird houses are beautiful but the bonding rime with McKinlee is priceless.

Nice design and I see you also use dowels like Alex does with his MDF give aways.

Thank you all for the nice comments ! I'd like to get the kids in the shop more as they grow older at least  until they discover boys!!!!!!

Hi Awsum55. I like dowels and use them rather than mortise and tenon joints. They locate well and on projects requiring strength, they make it strong in that area. Which Alex uses dowels a lot?

Nice craft project bird houses. I was not aware of the exit ramp on the inside.
Thanks, Steve. I have heard that scratches on the inside help the little ones up to the hole for their first flight, so I made them a tapered one to make it easier yet. Pretty soon the birds will be ordering their houses with them in it as an option!! have to add it to the blueprint!! Tee Hee..........
