Veteran Marker Holding Fixture

One of veterans from Post 23 Grand Rapids who is in charge of placing flags on all veterans' graves on Memorial Day asked if I could repair a good number of markers so they can be put back into service. Each veteran's grave is required to have a marker on it that holds the flag. These marker are cast aluminum with steel stakes. They used to have brass ones but so many were stolen and sold for scrap that they switched to these and today the new ones are now plastic. The rods are staked in but these were all loose and many had bent stakes. I decided to put a 3/32" Stainless roll pin through most of them  that I could not stake tighter or where the aluminum staking was cracked

These pieces were very hard to hold to drill so I made this fixture from a block of oak and some 5/8" maple plywood to hold them secure while drilling and driving in the roll pin. I finished all of them tonight. It really held them tight.
Here are some shots of the ones I was given. There are two different versions of the aluminum ones.

This one is 3/8" brass or copper and I'll attempt to straighten it.

As a veteran myself, I say thank you for your contributions to these veterans,  very much appreciated. Nice work.
Good job, Jim. Glad you took that on.

May you have the day you deserve!

Thank you al for the nice comments. I tried to straighten the copper medallion and it broke in two . At least I have the fixture if there are any more markers at different legion posts that need to be refurbished.

Hi Tom. I was going to go to the cemetery last Thursday to install all the flags but I  had McKinlee coming over early and they had plenty of help from our breakfast club!!

Thanks for what you are doing.

Friday, our vets club will install about 600 flags along the parkway running through our retirement community. We have 203 members out of 950 homes, so there are a lot of us.  Normally, we would have a vets' lunch but the ballroom is under renovation.

Never Forget !
