Marking Knives

I wanted to try it and I finally did it.

I think they look good enough as a marking knife but there were many "I should haves" when it comes to the detail for a cleaner finish. Now I learned it from this project so hopefully, I'll have chances to make some more in the future.

The maple one has a round grip but the end is square so it doesn't roll off a table.

I cut the maple handle scales little thicker than sapele ones.

I felt the small difference in the thickness was actually big so I ended up rounding off the grip part of the maple.

These are great, useful tools, you made them beautiful too!
oh my beautiful friend you need to stop underestimating your abilities ! you do some incredible work with the tools you use. your far too humble buddy. nice! knives !!!!!

working with my hands is a joy,it gives me a sense of fulfillment, somthing so many seek and so few find.-SAM MALOOF.

Yrti, nicely done, the grain is wonderful, and the shape fits nicely in a hand. A great tool to have in the shop, or a few.

Seeing yours and looking back I wish I built mine too in stead of buying one.

They look great and have your style built into them, and the blades are a good quality steel from Narex.

Great job! They’re such a fun little project…

Ryan/// ~sigh~ I blew up another bowl. Moke told me "I made the inside bigger than the outside".

Nice job Yrti.

I remember using then way back, but kept loosing/misplacing them.  Found it was cheaper to buy a new pencil with every loss.

If your first cut is too short... Take the second cut from the longer end... LBD

Nicely done, YRTi! Fine looking marking knifes, and learning too!

May you have the day you deserve!

Splinter, thank you! I'm getting closer to your accuracy level gradually, haha joking:)

Pottz, thank you! I don't like to excuse about the tools for the end result because there are people who can make good things with basic tools and I chose this style of woodworking to enjoy:) and I just want to improve more!

Eric, I remember your purple heart marking knives. One day, I'll make all layout tools like you!

James, Thank you!  it's fun to make and you should make your signature QSWO knife:)

RyanGi, Thank you as always. It's fun!

LBD, Thank you!  oh I actually hate loosing stuff especially cheap stuff, haha. It's like why do I have to spend money on this cheap stuff twice and it makes me extra upset so I keep cheap stuff very well.

Dave, Thank you. Now I should make a storage for this? haha.

Excellent as usual, really like the two sided design of the blade.   The wood grain and beauty make it a really good looking knife.

Ron

Ron, thank you! I'm happy with this marking knife and I'm looking forward to using it but don't worry, I won't mark in between dovetails:) I don't like to leave scribe marks, too. Though I do mark somewhere that's not needed by accident, haha!

Thank you TIm001! They are not the level so I'm happy to use them :)

Hey, that's a nice marking knife. I like the handle. Spear tips are always handy, especially the notched variant, giving you a place to put your finger for added slip-free pressure to get that depth of cut for a deep mark.
Thanks! This was my first marking knife and yes, I found it handy. I generally score lines gently so I chose the thin blade but the right size of the grip helps me prevent the blade from following strong grains:)

Two great marking knives. Well done. Nice video to. Another fun fact: In the Netherlands, Sapele is often referred to as sapelie mahonie (sapele mahogany). That is incorrect, but it does happen more often with types of wood. Funny that you initially mistook it for mahogany.

For those interested in a (somewhat long) read to understand Dutchy’s comment, look here

Ryan/// ~sigh~ I blew up another bowl. Moke told me "I made the inside bigger than the outside".

Dutchy, I just thought I bought African Mahogany by its look because I didn't know there are many variations at that time. Then, after handling a good amount of African Mahogany, I realized it was definitely harder and something different, haha.

Tony, Thank you It was a giveaway so no complaint, haha.
