With this car being a convertible and I only drive it in nice weather, I rarely put the top up. The problem is there is no place to safely leave anything of value in the car that is too large for the glove box for fear of it being stolen.
I decided to make something that would let me walk away from my car and know anything left behind would be safe. I used cardboard at first to make a template and then transferred it to 3/4” plywood. I designed it so the entire top half would fold down when the seats are tilted froward. This allowed me to put a folding chair back near the convertible top. I also wanted some way to put something smaller back there without having to do as many moves, so I made a small door and added a lock.
It all worked well, but needed something else to make it look like it belonged there. I bought a new emblem and installed it on the door. I was very happy with how it turned out. I’ve been using it for the last 15 years. I was going to try and make these for sale, but decided not to because most Corvette owners are really very into originality and I want my car to be fun and don’t care if it is original.
My paint job is House of Color Candy Apple Brandywine over gold flake which is not original and the steering wheel I made isn’t either. The engine is a 383 stroker engine with 430 HP, obviously not original. This car has been altered to make me happy and it is a lot more fun than it was when it was from the factory.
