Cattail Box

This little box is 4.5” tall and 3” wide and deep. The body is made of cherry. I don’t know what the top or bottom wood is, but it is very hard and shows some dark grain lines that I hoped would show up more when beveled and they did.

For the image on the front I used my laser to etch the background and outline the design. Next I used a wood burning tool to create the rough texture.

When I showed it to my wife she said it looks like a solid piece of cherry. The joints are some of the best I’ve ever done. I also added a raised bottom so the box appears to float.

Nice! And nice use of the laser to assist in the process.

Ryan/// ~sigh~ I blew up another bowl. Moke told me "I made the inside bigger than the outside".

99% sure the top is oak.

Nice looking container, the relief is a fine detail!

To see if I understood the relief process, you just lased out the dark area with a few passes to get some depth, then dimpled it with a wood burner?
Nice! I agree with SplinterGroup- that top is oak.

very unique and beautiful box!
Nicely done John! The panel is beautiful and I like the floating base.

If your first cut is too short... Take the second cut from the longer end... LBD

Beautiful box. I really like the front panel with the texture.
If you call it Oak, Oak it is, I cannot comment either way
Now more importantly looking inside I see no cats tails in there or joints for that matter?

Smokin!

Thanks to all of you for the nice comments.

Yes Bruce, I wanted the edges of the design to be sharp and I couldn't achieve that with just the wood burner.
