2023 BeerBQ Swap

I got JD77 for my recipient for this swap and already had an idea of a personalized clock in mind. I found a company that makes the clock faces and had one beer related that would include a person's name, Joe in this instance. Since the clock face was round, I had to enlist the help of Lazyman (Nathan) for help since he has a CNC machine to cut the round parts from some glued up ash (I think).

Here he is cutting a recess to receive a 1/4" glass front (I didn't want to chance any breakage in shipping).

It was my wife's idea to mount it on something in the shape of his state so I glued up some mahogany boards. He downloaded an image of the shape of Arkansas, JD's state, and had his CNC draw it on the board.

I took it home and used my router to put a larger round-over on the top circle.

Next I routed out the circle in the mahogany backing and by hand routed the squiggly shape of the Mississippi River.

Refined it with a bunch of files and rasps.

The glued the whole mess up and finished with spray lacquer.

Next, I wanted to make a steak flipper as a bonus. My mistake, I used 1/2" square bar, should have used 3/8".
I started by making a leaf (my first) on one end.

Then bent it over for a twist.

My nephew is a really good blacksmith/farrier and helped me twist the doubled portion. I'm very glad he did because it took us 6 tries to get it right, the curse of using 1/2" stock. I had fount out JD was a leftie so it was twisted so the leaf would be a thumb rest.

I put another twist in and started cleaning it up.

I cut off the excess bar and left 4" to draw out into the taper and a leftie pig tail.

Heated it some and put canola oil on as a protection which turned it almost black.

Apologies for this being so long and picture heavy.
I learned a lot on this swap and it was fun. Thanks to Nathan and my nephew Burr for all their help and especially to Kenny for running the swap again.

Great Job Duck! I admire the inclusion of the blacksmithing work, truly a personal touch.
The clock is really cool with the "Joe's" and personal touches. Too bad JD didn't live in a Dakota or Wyoming, coulda saved a ton of file work 🤠
Thanks Steve and Pottz!
Even AZ or NM would have been easier Splint.

That clock looks great and the mahogany is beautiful.  The wavy line is so perfect. I can only cut Wyoming, Colorado or that kind of shape... Good job!

No name noobie here

Great job! Beautiful work.

Ryan/// ~sigh~ I blew up another bowl. Moke told me "I made the inside bigger than the outside".

You definitely turned out a couple of great items for the swap.

I didn't realize that you took that picture with me and the CNC.  I usually charge a modelling fee for that.

--Nathan, TX. Hire the lazy man. He may not do as much work but that's because he will find a better way.

Thanks YRTi and Ryan!
I've got your fee Nathan, it's a six pack of smooth NM beer. 😊

Good looking clock Duck. Nice job on all the parts and pieces
Very nice work, Duck! And you captured a picture of the wild Lazyman in his native environment! Call Nat Geo!

May you have the day you deserve!

Thanks Corelz!
Dave I'm glad Nathan had the mini split going cause it was hot there.

LOVE the clock Duck that's a super idea for the swap😎  I'm not big on the pigtail flippers in general, I prefer to use my tongs.  But if I had a hand-forged one that looked like that, my tongs would get a break on steak day!  Thanks for participating again.  You always make the thread fun and come up with great ideas for the project!

PS Tell that guy with the CNC he better stop wearing those earmuffs.  They're rubbing all the hair off!
That guy said to pass on that the bald spot was caused by an childhood accident.  He grabbed a bottle of Nair instead of the Brylcream.  He normally ties his hair up in a topknot but that interferes with the earmuffs.

Thanks Ron and Kenny!

I can set him up with my hair stylist.  It's a lot easier to camouflage those Nair spots than to try to hide them 😆
Nice clock duckmilk, and I really like the hand forged steak flipper.
Thanks adot!
Both the clock and flipper were a real challenge Mike.
